Sacachun

8.6 / 10 | 1h 13m | Ecuador
2018 | Documentary
Documentary about a group of elders in a ghost town and their lifetime struggle to gain respect for their culture and for their different ways of understanding faith. In a village where the lack of water is the main reason for its slow physical decay, this need becomes the primary force that supports their demands to local authorities, as well as their faith in an ancestral god-turned-saint stone monolith, which was forcefully removed from their lives. Their roots and their age-old beliefs constitute the legacy these elders want to leave for new generations, and sustain their hope that their hometown of Sacachún--and what it means to them--will survive after they are gone. Will the return of the ancient monolith give the town a second chance? The main characters remind us all that nothing is more powerful than our own convictions, and that there is no such thing as a lost cause.
