Hole in the Rock Expedition

In 1879 a faithful group of Utahans sought to establish a settlement in southeastern Utah. Their six month journey would required conquering rugged impassable territory, sheer sandstone walls, steep mountainsides and solid rock ridges. The pioneers began by blasting a roadway through a rocky crevice barely large enough for a man to walk through. Then workers tacked a roadway on to the side of a vertical mountain and constructed a ferry to cross a treacherous river. Through that "Hole in the Rock", 250 men women and children, 83 wagons and over a thousand head of livestock descended to the perilous Colorado River. Hosted by author Gerald N.
